I once camped out on a beach in the freezing cold amidst an insane rainstorm. I had to set up my tent in pitch black with no flashlight..... I was ill prepared to say the least. The focus of this trip was a weekend-long Mandolin workshop in Cape Cod. I opted to camp for 15 dollars/night rather than spend the 90 dollars for the on-site cabins. The special guest at the workshop was the great Rich Delgrosso and the whole experience got me familiar with Blues music, and more specifically, mandolin blues. Two years later and accompanied by the unfortunate passing of the legendary Jack Rose, I started exploring more old-timey music and pre-war genres after attending the Jack Rose Tribute show in Philadelphia (which, amazingly featured artists such as Thurston Moore, Paul Flaherty, and Chris Corsano). It also helps that a co-worker who devotes much of his livelihood to American folk genres sported me a hard drives-full amount of his collection. Thanks! Above is some more recent blues mandolin that I stumbled upon after looking into the likes of Yank Rachell and Sleepy John Estes. All while going nuts over the new Freeway and Jake one Stimulus Package, of course. -Jagwire

One time in middle school, I wrote POWELL Skateboards a letter in search of this legendary video called "The Search For Animal Chin". I'm sure it was a letter filled with some innocent skaterat words that any other company would have laughed at or completely disregarded. But POWELL responded back. I first met Eric Wagner back in 10th grade when he moved to Harvey's Lake. Hundreds of stories I got with this dude, like smashing cinderblocks through car windows on the Wyoming Ave cruise strip at 8pm, robbing a video store in Jersey and stealing "Bad Lieutenant", wearing shower caps all day at school (Lake Lehman H.S.), heelflipping the gates at tech(in '93!), the list goes on. Thought I'd share some quick footage I shot last weekend. He's been ripping frontside 360 ollies on his longboard off the triangle ledge at POPS, also treflipping Eurogaps here and there...all on longboard, shit looks like a helicopter. Here he rides a tiny plastic bananaboard that I was barely able to stand on. My first skateboard was actually a scamp....which was a green version of this board. Me and my sister each had our own. In the late 90's, I exchanged tapes with this kid in Reno, Nevada. I think I met him in an AOL chatroom for hip-hop or something. His nom de plum was Diatomaceous. He's probably the reason why I ever heard of people like Sixtoo, Living Legends, Scienz of Life, and Siah (... that is until I heard of Sandbox Automatic).

Tangent: Do you remember Sandbox Automatic, and how they used to write great descriptions for their new releases? I guess that's kind of the direction that blogs operate under now.

Back to the story: So this kid that goes by the name of Diatomaceous, sends me this tape that has this one particular song that blew my mind. It was by a rapper named Buck 65, and the track sounded like nothing I ever heard before. It was called "Wildlife".

As a product of a fairly conservative household, I listened to a lot of my first cd's and tapes with headphones. Regardless of that reason, I probably would have still listened to Buck 65 in headphones, because of some symbolic need for self-preservation or to keep myself untamed from compromising criticisms. To this day, I play this song for people, and they think its simply wack or weird. Oh well. It is called the Wildlife. And in a sense, we are our own elected council of nature conservation.

Wearing elaborate costumes and leading large bands in songs with names speaking of other galaxies, stars, war, and peace, he carved himself a piece of time. Asides from all that, he was an amazing musician who produced many, many albums and whose influence is unparalleled.

Insert Coins
Recently I got to film my friend Sean Driscoll skateboarding around the Columbia Heights/Shaw area of Washington DC. (*He is a flow rider for Stereo for all publicity and legal purposes.) We only spent about 2 hours filming, right before his workshift at the the Greek Spot in the historic U Street area. There's a cameo of Pulaski OG Hojin Chang in the end. The first video was intended to be an intro to the second video. Hopefully we'll see more footage soon.

The first cassette single I ever purchased was Groove Theory's "Tell Me". I never quite understood my affinity towards neo-soul, but I am always intrigued and somewhat proud of my appreciation towards a genre with good intentions and no street credibility. This video features quite the mash-up of Groove Theory with Art of Noise. Usually, I am not a fan of mashups, but this is almost a flawless match. Check it.

I stepped out of class today, and somebody was blasting this song out of his car. It was kind of comedic and inspirational. I basked in a euphoric moment of nostalgia, as I used to hear the original song by DJ KC (?) during the rave/dance days of early 2000's. Everyone get their mean head nod on, or their dagger on as Jaguarman can.

Henry Sanchez: Sight Unseen

In retrospect, the skateboarding in this particular part was always off the hook, but the Cali Agents as a soundtrack did not age too well. Girl/Chocolate had a good formula of putting classic music in their videos, which allowed for a more timeless feel. Relax and take notes.

Alien Workshop's MindField was pretty good. A little heavy in retrospeect due to the large number of great parts from an almost too large team of skateboarders. I guess its hard to soak it all in within one sitting.

Earlier this week I was exiled from the house due to the exterminator taking over the premises. During that day, I decided to ride my bike to the museum areas for kicks. I opted for the Newseum, but it was big bucks to get in. Instead I went to the free Native American Smithsonian museum with free Air Conditioning.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that they dedicated the entire 2nd level (out of its 4 levels) to an exhibit on skateboarding culture of modern Native Americans. The previous photos are all related to that exhibit, with a few missing photos of MURF and some amateurs that I never heard of. Overall, that museum is amazing, and I suggest anyone to go check it out.

My friend Andreas introduced this band "The Radio Dept" to me years ago, and I've been a fan ever since. Part of the story behind the band consists of the band falling apart, leaving behind no drummer. That led the band to using beat programs and machines, which gave them their unique sound. They're from Sweden if I'm not mistaken. Enjoy.

Around 2003-5 at the peak of my early 20's angst, I found a lot of relief reading Adrian Tomine's comic books. They're really simple but incorporate a lot of "mise en scene" if you will.

Without getting too pretentious, Tomine's imagery captures those short and subtle moments that mean a whole lot, but are often never transcribed properly. Everyone experiences those moments, especially in our lonesome.

It's always a good thing to give ourselves a break from our public personas once in awhile.
